My First Day at Auburn Journalism Camp

Picture
During my first day here at the Auburn Journalism Workshop we hit the ground running with three classes.  This morning I was in a photography workshop to learn about taking better pictures.  This afternoon I went to a class about writing leads for articles and one where we learned how to make websites, and I created this site! I've already made some new friends, and my roommate Kendall and I are excited to see what the rest of the week will bring!

Day 2 of Auburn

The heat hasn't dropped any, and neither has the quick pace we set early in the week with our work and class schedule.  Yesterday we attended a number of classes and lectures ranging from grammar help to sports writing, with a visit from the Anniston Star editor & a broadcast journalist.  We finished the day with a trip to Cheeburger Cheeburger for dinner with a football game following.  The week here is proving itself to be full of challenges and lots of great experiences that I will be able to bring back to my high school paper next fall!

Day 3 at Auburn

Today may have been our last day of classes, but the work is far from over.  We spent the morning with Dr. Adams and Professor Fairley learning about the rights of student journalists and ways to improve our student papers.  After lunch we met with LaDarius Owens for a press conference.  He was incredibly nice and it was a great first press conference!  Once we finished interviewing and photographing Owens we all retreated to the labs for the next five hours to write our articles and update our websites.  We returned to the dorms exhausted and I crashed in my bed as soon as I could.

My Fourth Day

Today we all loaded up bright and early for our field trip to Montgomery.  Beginning at the Southern Poverty Law Center, we learned about journalism with a non-profit organization, and toured the museum.  We each added our name to their Wall of Tolerance, and saw their fountain with 40 names of martyrs for Civil Rights engraved on it.  We ate lunch during a presentation from various journalists at the Montgomery Advertiser, and then finished the trip with a visit to the WFSA studio.  The day was a great final day to this amazing week, and I know that tomorrow it will be hard to say good bye to all of the great friends that I have made here.
